At Great Western Malting Co., sustainability is more than a catchphrase; it is a key aspect of our business.
Our efforts to practice sound sustainability include: making sure that our operations have a minimal impact on the environment, that we are using our resources wisely, and that we are directly supporting the growth of the communities surrounding our plants. Our sustainability efforts are directly driven by our mission statement: “We operate to benefit our shareholders, customers and our company. Our team will conduct business ethically and responsibly as we strive to have our process, product and service recognized as the best.”
Great Western Malting uses an advanced management system that sets clear operational and sustainability goals, which are monitored and reviewed weekly. These goals include metrics for water, energy, carbon footprint, and waste and by-product generation. These metrics allow direct feedback to employees on their progress toward our goals, and allow quick and immediate decisions to further reduce the impact of our operations. We envision our employees leading our company into an increasingly efficient future.
Each of our sites actively manages its energy use and carbon footprint. Their efforts include the recovery of biogenic heat generated by the germinating grain, process heat recovery, and the installation of more energy-efficient equipment and process controls.
Great Western Malting and our sister companies have the most geographically diverse locations of any North American malt supplier. This allows our company to minimize the carbon impact of our incoming grain and outgoing product transportation, and ensures prompt service for our customers.
Our synergy projects use waste heat from nearby industrial processes. And our water reclamation projects directly reduce our impact on watersheds as we recycle our wastewater into high-grade water for use by nearby industrial plants. These efforts help reduce the total water used in the watershed and increase the capacity of city-owned wastewater plants.
